I’ve never really been a helmet guy. Not because I don’t believe in safety, but because most water sports helmets I’ve worn over the years always had the same issues: too heavy, too bulky, poor ventilation or simply uncomfortable enough that I’d eventually take them off. The new Soöruz Speed Helmet is the first one that genuinely changed my mind. After a few sessions, I simply forgot I was wearing it. And that’s probably the biggest compliment you can give a helmet.
Straight out of the box, the Speed Helmet feels noticeably lighter than many traditional watersports helmets. The shell is compact, the fit is low profile and the adjustment system allows you to fine tune the fit without creating pressure points. The Fidlock magnetic buckle is another detail you quickly learn to appreciate. Closing the helmet with one hand, even wearing gloves or with cold fingers is incredibly easy.
On the water is where the helmet really impressed me. The combination of its lightweight construction and excellent ventilation means you stop noticing it almost immediately. The front and rear vents keep air flowing while riding, preventing that “hot head” feeling many helmets suffer from. Even during long wingfoil sessions, comfort was never an issue. The removable ear pads are another nice touch.
Some riders prefer extra protection and reduced wind noise, while others like to keep their hearing completely open. Being able to choose depending on the conditions is a real advantage. With my exostosis in the ears I kept them on and I didn’t need to use ear plugs which I really loved.
In fact, wearing the Speed Helmet gave me enough confidence to start attempting my first backflips in wingfoil. Not because the helmet suddenly makes tricks safe but because removing that small mental barrier changes the way you approach progression. You commit more. You hesitate less. And that’s often the difference between trying something new or waiting another six months.
Who is it for? Pretty much everyone, whatever water sport you’re in to. If you’re spending time around carbon foils, hard boards and increasing speeds, wearing a helmet simply makes sense. And when it feels this comfortable, there’s really no reason not to.
