The rise of parawinging has created a whole new category of equipment. One of the biggest challenges isn’t actually riding the parawing, it’s packing it, and it’s what this discipline is all about. Whether you’re trying to paddle through breaking waves, surf a swell with both hands free or simply pack everything away before heading back to the beach, parawing storage quickly becomes one of the most important aspects of the discipline.
ION’s new Jam Vest is one of the first products designed specifically to solve that problem. Unlike traditional waist-mounted parawing bags, the Jam Vest integrates two large front storage pockets directly into a loose-fitting neoprene jacket. One pocket is dedicated to the canopy while the second stores the control bar separately, preventing tangles and making redeployment significantly quicker.
The vest is intentionally oversized so it fits comfortably over your wetsuit, impact vest or harness without restricting movement. The neoprene construction provides an extra layer of warmth without feeling bulky. Small details immediately show that ION developed this with actual riders: harness openings, a Restube attachment point, a secure zip pocket for small essentials and bright color accents for increased visibility. Compared to a classic waist pouch, storing the parawing becomes much faster and more intuitive. Instead of reaching behind your back or around your waist, everything is right in front of you. The canopy naturally slides into one pocket while the bar goes into the other, reducing the chances of line twists or tangles. With both hands completely free, surfing swell suddenly feels much more natural. There’s no bulky pouch bouncing around your waist and no need to worry about the wing falling out while carving. It almost feels like traditional downwind foiling, except you always have the option to redeploy the wing within seconds. That quick deployment is probably the Jam Vest’s biggest strength and what I really loved about it.
Beyond surfing, the Jam Vest also proves useful in situations every parawing rider eventually encounters. Crossing a crashing shorebreak becomes much easier since both hands remain available for paddling. Or at the end of the session, instead of trying to fly the wing all the way back to the beach, you can simply pack everything away offshore and paddle home without fighting the wind.
As parawinging continues to evolve, dedicated accessories like the Jam Vest are becoming just as important as the wings themselves. After several sessions, it’s difficult to go back to a traditional waist bag. It doesn’t revolutionize the sport, but it removes one of its biggest annoyances, and sometimes that’s exactly what great gear is supposed to do.
