The 2025 FreeWing AIR Team V5 is a no-compromise, high-performance wing built for riders looking for maximum responsiveness, durability, and lightweight control. This new version features their exclusive Ho’okipa Ultra PE for the leading edge and strut, an Ultra-X canopy, and a pistol grip prepreg carbon boom. All geared toward delivering a stiff, light, and highly efficient ride. FreeWing’s use of Ho’okipa material sets this wing apart, with this material combining incredibly low elongation under load with exceptional tensile strength. It rivals and, I would suggest in some parameters, outperforms even Aluula wings, while maintaining competitive weight thanks to optimized seam designs. And the AIR Team V5 brings a refined geometry with a medium aspect ratio, and a relatively short center strut, all designed to offer compact power, and no flutter across the entire wind range.
On the water, the FreeWing AIR Team V5 delivers exactly what you’d expect from its high-tech build. I tested the 5m in various conditions, from 12 to 15 knots to over 20 knots, paired with a relatively small board (46L) for all the sessions. What stood out immediately is the explosive power delivery at take-off and also at low-end and tight upwind angles. Just a couple of pumps and you're flying. The power delivery is instantaneous, which translates to very quick take-offs, which is a real benefit when out in the waves. Once on foil, the wing stays light in the hands and maintains forward drive without the need for constant adjustment. The carbon boom is a standout feature, offering excellent comfort and precise handling. Whether you're flagging out on a wave or loading up for a jump, it provides a solid, confident grip without adding weight or complexity. The pistol shape of the boom is really useful too – you get to choose how to hold your wing while jibing or surfing, and it creates a transition before the freefly handle when you want to flag out the wing.
In jumps, the AIR Team V5 excels, with remarkable hang time. The combination of stiff frame and well-tuned canopy tension gives lift that feels floaty and controlled, making aerial maneuvers feel dialed-in and predictable.
You would think that having all those materials on the canopy would make this wing feel heavier in the hand, but this is not the case at all. The 5m weighs 2.64kg with the boom, making it one of the lightest on the market. The materials strike a clever balance between high-performance stiffness and light weight, without being overly harsh, which keeps the ride lively and engaging across a wide range of conditions, even in the high-end wind range.
The FreeWing AIR Team V5 is clearly aimed at advanced to expert wingfoilers who want to push their riding, whether in waves, freestyle, or technical freeride sessions. It’s a significant step up in both material technology and ride feel, offering one of the most direct, responsive, and controlled winging experiences on the market today.
