Cedrus Evolution Aluminum Forged Mast

Cedrus has been on the cutting edge of universal masts providing a one-mast solution to almost any foil brand. The latest iteration from Cedrus is the all-new Evolution Aluminum mast. With a very reasonable price point, riders have access to a level of stiffness and performance similar or exceeding many of the latest high-modulus masts on the market. The unique adapter system Cedrus has developed creates a seamless, OEM style connection that is fully integrated and streamlined into the mast foot with zero adapter wiggle or play. This system does not have the bulk of larger adapters often found with other masts that can be adapted into a universal system.

A common issue with aluminum masts is the high potential for corrosion when used in saltwater environments. Cedrus has addressed this by a unique sealed assembly that eliminates baseplate connection hardware and prevents water intrusion. This welded construction combined with a flashy gold anodization and stainless-steel adapter inserts means the Evolution Aluminum will require significantly less maintenance than most Aluminum masts.

Mast testing was done in a variety of conditions, mostly small wave riding and downwind. The first and most noticeable characteristic of the Cedrus Aluminum Forged mast is the weight. This is a constant factor with aluminum masts when compared to a carbon alternative. However, this weight is only noticeable in the parking lot or when carrying your setup. Once you’re in the water and on foil, the mast weight is not a discernable characteristic. Riders sending inverts or airs may experience more input from the mast weight, but most riders who are carving waves or downwinding will not have any impact from the mast weight.

On foil the first feeling is a noticeable stiffness provided by the more substantial 16mm profile that flares thicker to 20mm at the base plate and foot. When riding foils with extreme (1m +) spans, and/or heavier riders, this stiffness improvement becomes even more noticeable, allowing riders to have confidence and consistency when loading up these wider span wings. On the other hand, when compared to some of the highest performance modern carbon masts pushing the limits of thickness, the thicker 16mm profile of the Cedrus Aluminum Forged does exhibit a bit more drag or does not feel as “slippery” as some of the thinner <14mm thickness masts. Turning and pumping with the Cedrus Evolution Aluminum feels great, the direct input feel and control gained by the thicker profile encourages riders to be a bit more aggressive through maneuvers. The hollow aluminum extrusion offers a lot of feedback and feel through the mast, however this can act as a resonance chamber for any vibration generated by the wing or mast that has an audible ride at various speeds. However these quirks are not dissimilar to that of other “universal” masts that use larger adapter systems to fit various foil brands.

Overall, riders who are seeking a one-mast system that has OEM quality integrated adapters and are willing to exchange some top end performance for cost, adaptability, and simplicity will find an excellent solution in the Cedrus Aluminum Forged.
