For Gerry Lopez, riding waves has never been about doing things one particular way… and that includes incorporating Foil Drive.

Few surfers have had a career as influential or as varied as Lopez. Known around the world as “Mr. Pipeline,” he helped redefine what was possible at Hawaii’s legendary Banzai Pipeline during the 1970s, becoming renowned for his calm, precise approach to one of surfing’s most challenging waves. He won the Pipeline Masters in 1972 and 1973, and his influence has extended far beyond competition, through surfboard design, surf culture and a lifelong willingness to explore new ways of riding.

Now 77, Lopez is still chasing that same feeling that has driven him throughout his life: the feeling of gliding across the water.

“I've always been interested in different ways to ride waves.”

It's a fitting philosophy for someone who has spent his life exploring different ways to move across the ocean and snow. From surfing and snowboarding to stand-up paddleboarding and foiling, Lopez has never been afraid to become a beginner again and discover what comes next.

That curiosity has now led him to Foil Drive. In Mexico, Lopez reflects on his relationship with surfing, his journey into foiling and what continues to draw him back to the ocean.

“I think this is my last hurrah,” he says. “The surf's great and surfing's been my life and it's what I love to do.”
