Based in the Dominican Republic’s beautiful Samaná Peninsula, WingFoil Las Terrenas is a dedicated wingfoil school offering lessons, coaching, rentals and guided adventures. With warm water, reliable trade winds and uncrowded spots along the coast, it’s an ideal destination for riders looking to learn, progress or explore beyond the usual Caribbean hotspots.

INTRODUCTION

WingFoil Las Terrenas is a 100% wingfoil school based in Las Terrenas, on the Samana Peninsula in the Dominican Republic. Founded in 2023, the school offers beginner lessons, progression coaching, parawing lessons, rental, tow foil sessions and coaching, SUP foil and surf foil rental, with a strong focus on safe learning and local spot knowledge. Sessions are organized around the best conditions of the day, mainly between Punta Popy and Playa Portillo. For independent riders, the school offers gear storage, transport to the spot, supervised riding, downwinders along the coast, and day trips to the south side of Samana Bay, a unique area known as one of the Caribbean’s main humpback whale breeding grounds from mid-January to mid-March. Partner accommodation is available at Villas Palmar, with villas and studios five minutes from the spot.

WHAT MAKES THEM DIFFERENT

Las Terrenas is still a little-known wingfoil destination, so the spot remains uncrowded compared with many classic Caribbean locations. It offers a long, warm-water season from February to September, side-shore trade winds, coastal downwind options and several nearby spots, from winter freefly training at Punta Popy to flatter summer conditions and offshore swell runs. Many visitors are surprised that May, June, July and August can be some of the best months for learning and progressing here, with warm water, fewer crowds and reliable trade-wind conditions. In development are week-long wing camps in Punta Rucia, a preserved, authentic village on the northwest coast that offers ultra-flat water.

CONDITIONS & SETUP

Expect sideshore trade winds, mainly east to northeast, usually around 12-22 knots during the main season, with the wind typically building in the afternoon from around 1pm.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

The most reliable wingfoil period is generally from February to September. From December to April, Punta Popy can offer great conditions for freefly training and progression, with a flat-water backup spot for beginners. From May to September, conditions are usually flatter closer to shore, while autonomous riders can still head further out to enjoy the swell. Spring and summer are especially underrated internationally.

ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITIES

Las Terrenas is a great no-wind destination too: tow foil, SUP foil, surf foil, surfing at Playa Bonita or Playa Coson, snorkeling, waterfalls, fishing trips, coffee and chocolate farm tours, ATV trips and boat tours. Visitors can also discover Las Galeras, an authentic village at the end of Samana Bay. From mid-January to mid-March, Samana Bay is famous for humpback whale watching. Cabarete, the world-famous wind and watersports spot, is around three hours from Las Terrenas and can be discovered during a trip to the north coast.
