Based in Vila Nova de Milfontes on Portugal’s wild Alentejo coast, TowTrips offers exclusive tow-foiling experiences across 10 private waves, with expert jet ski drivers and the latest Armstrong equipment. Combining world-class sessions with boutique accommodation, private spa facilities and exceptional Portuguese gastronomy, it delivers a premium foiling getaway in one of Europe’s most beautiful and uncrowded coastlines.
INTRODUCTION
TowTrips organizes legendary tow foil trips in Portugal between October and May. They have direct access to 10 private waves, big and small, three jet skis, and an amazing team of skilled drivers. They launch in the harbor and are on the waves within minutes. Home base is Vila Nova de Milfontes, a small white-and-blue village on the Alentejo coast where the Mira river meets the Atlantic. The whole coast is natural park: cliffs, empty beaches, no crowds. They work with three upper-class boutique resorts for a premium stay during your trip, all minutes from the harbor. After every session day there’s a private spa with pool, hot tub and sauna.
WHAT MAKES THEM DIFFERENT
The combination of being towed into private waves, the spa, the boutique resorts, Portuguese gastronomy, and of course the latest Armstrong gear, is a mind-blowing experience. First-time visitors always ask what foils are ridden. When TowTrips replies that it’s mainly the Armstrong MA 590 Mk II, it scares some of them – most have never ridden anything that small. Once they try it, they fall in love with it pretty soon.
CONDITIONS
Mornings are mostly glassy or light offshore with clear water. December to March has the least wind while in October, April and May a northwest sea breeze can build in the afternoon, though usually less than 12 knots. Two out of three session hours are under 10 knots in winter. The tide doesn’t have much effect and you can ride at every tide.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
The trips run October till May. December to March is the most consistent with swell around 2m at 12 to 15 seconds, waves 9 out of 10 days, the least wind, and water 15 to 16°C. October, April and May are warmer (water 16 to 19°C) with smaller swell and a bit more afternoon wind. Crowds are never an issue – in winter we have the coast to ourselves. Slots are limited, so book ahead.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITIES
A flat day is rare in winter, around 1 in 10, and then your session is easily moved. Meanwhile you can surf at Malhão or Furnas, horse ride or mountain bike through the natural park, kayak or SUP up the Mira river, or walk a stage of the Fishermen’s Trail (Rota Vicentina) which runs right through the village. Or do what the team do: spa, a long lunch, and sunset on the beach.
Fly to Lisbon or Faro, both two hours by car. Book a trip and the airport transfer is included. Sessions only – rent a car or TowTrips can arrange a taxi.
Nothing but a wetsuit. All Armstrong gear is included: small tow boards and MA Mk II foils, rigged to your weight and level. Own foil welcome.
4/3 in October, April and May. 5/3 from November to March. Impact vest and helmet provided.
Fresh fish from the grill or picanha. Book a trip and TowTrips reserve your table at their favorite places in the village.
A drink with a view at Bar do Canal or the Riverside pub, gin tonic and tapas at Ritual, sunset at Porto das Barcas. No clubs – it’s a quiet village in winter.
