INTRODUCTION
Surfisland West Crete Watersports Center is based on Falasarna Beach, on the west coast of Crete, Greece. One of Crete’s most famous beaches, Falasarna combines a long sandy shoreline, crystal-clear Mediterranean water, and an exposed western coastline that makes it a natural setting for wind and foiling sports. The area offers regular wind conditions through much of the year, giving wingfoilers the opportunity to get on the water across an extended season. The combination of open-sea conditions, a spacious beach and varied riding possibilities makes Falasarna an attractive destination for riders looking to learn, improve or simply enjoy time on the water. Surfisland has been operating at Falasarna for 15 years, with extensive experience in water sports and a strong emphasis on coaching and rider progression. The center offers wingfoiling, windsurfing, surfing and SUP, welcoming everyone from first-time riders to experienced foilers looking to take their skills further.
WHAT MAKES THEM DIFFERENT
Falasarna combines consistently reliable wind with flat-water conditions close to a wide sandy beach. This combination creates a particularly accessible riding environment, giving beginners a comfortable and controlled setting to learn while providing advanced riders with consistent conditions for freeriding and progression. This is a foiling paradise hidden in a world-famous Natural Beauty. First-time visitors often notice how much passion for wingfoiling is shared by the Surfisland team. They go beyond teaching technique, sharing their knowledge, enthusiasm and love for the sport through a structured approach focused on confidence, progression and genuine enjoyment on the water.
CONDITIONS
Falasarna Beach works best in northeast or northerly winds. There is an alternative spot at Chania Kalamaki Beach that works with any westerly winds. The wind averages 12-20 knots, occasionally 22-27 knots. You will enjoy flat water with no tidal effect and an easy beach launch.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
Western Crete offers wind opportunities year-round, with the main season running from April through late October. Falasarna works particularly well with the classic Meltemi from late June through October, providing regular daily riding conditions. Their second spot in Kalamaki, Chania, offers alternatives for different wind patterns. March to May requires a full wetsuit; June to September is boardshorts and rash vest weather, while October suits a shorty. July and August are peak season, while September and October offer a quieter, more spacious and relaxed experience.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITIES
When the wind is off, Western Crete offers plenty to explore. Visitors can discover the dramatic Samaria Gorge and other mountain trails, explore the historic old town and Venetian harbor of Chania, or relax at some of the region’s famous beaches. Private boat trips, jeep safaris, wine and olive-oil tastings, and Cretan cooking experiences offer different ways to experience the region. With its combination of mountains, coastline, history, gastronomy and local culture, there is something for every type of traveler.
Fly into Chania International Airport (CHQ), 1-1.5 hours by car from Falasarna. Heraklion International Airport (HER) is also an option, around 3 hours away. Private transfers available on request.
Full wingfoil equipment available for all levels: 2.5-6m wings, 700-2,000cm² foils, and 55-150L boards, covering everything from first-time beginners to advanced riders.
Summer requires only boardshorts/bikini and rash vest. Full wetsuits are provided by Surfisland during the cooler early and late season, so visitors need not bring their own.
A typical evening is a celebration of Mediterranean and Cretan cuisine, from handmade kaltsounakia and fresh fish to slow-cooked tsigariasto lamb, accompanied by vibrant salads and seasonal vegetables.
Falasarna’s organized beach bars and restaurants make it easy to linger by the sea. Enjoy an evening drink at Orange Blue, fresh fish at Kapetan Nikolas, Cretan flavors at Panorama and Spilios, or a night out in Chania.
