INTRODUCTION

Porto Pollo Pro Center is located directly on the windsurfing and wingfoiling beach of Porto Pollo, near Palau on the northern coast of Sardinia and facing the La Maddalena Archipelago. Porto Pollo is a long-established wind sports destination that attracts beginners, families, independent riders, and international groups. The sandy beach, easy water access, and mainly flat-water conditions make the spot suitable for first wingfoil lessons, progression and freeriding. More experienced riders can also take advantage of stronger Mistral conditions and the open water outside the sheltered bay. Local wind conditions are influenced by the channel between Sardinia and Corsica, with Mistral and easterly winds creating varied conditions throughout the season. The center offers wingfoil and windsurfing instruction, equipment rental, storage, sunloungers and rescue assistance.

WHAT MAKES THEM DIFFERENT

Porto Pollo’s narrow sandy isthmus creates two opposite-facing bays. This gives wingfoilers access to sheltered flat water and a more open, choppier area within the same location, while kite traffic uses a separate designated beach. The channel between Sardinia and Corsica can also accelerate the Mistral wind. Visitors are often surprised by how different the wind and water conditions can be across the two bays: a short walk around the isthmus can take you from sheltered flat water to stronger wind and chop.

CONDITIONS

The Mistral and Ponente come in northwest to west. Easterly winds can also provide good conditions. The wind is approximately 15-25 knots, with stronger Mistral days sometimes exceeding 30 knots. The water is flat to choppy and there is no tide to worry about. Launching is easy from the sandy beach.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

May, June, September and October offer the best balance of reliable wind, pleasant temperatures, and fewer visitors. July and August are the hottest and busiest months, with regular thermal winds and the warmest water. Spring and autumn often bring stronger Mistral systems. The center’s main operating season runs from Easter until early November.

ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITIES

On calm days, visitors can use SUPs or kayaks to explore the nearby coastline, book an eFoil session, or join a boat trip from Palau into the La Maddalena Archipelago. On land, Capo Testa and Roccia dell’Orso offer coastal walks and viewpoints, while Palau and Santa Teresa Gallura are suitable for relaxed day trips.

Getting There

Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport is approximately 45-60 minutes away. A rental car or pre-booked transfer is recommended.

Gear Options

Bring freeride wingfoil gear with 3–6 m² wings and a foil suited to your level. Full rental equipment is also available at the center.
