Set on Sri Lanka’s Kalpitiya peninsula, Kitesurfing Lanka offers direct access to both butter-flat lagoon water and ocean swell, making it a unique playground for kitesurfers and wingfoilers of all levels. Blending tropical adventure with a strong focus on conservation and community, KSL is as much about the people and place as it is about time on the water.

INTRODUCTION

Founded on Kalpitiya’s peninsula between the Indian Ocean and a flat-water lagoon, Kitesurfing Lanka (KSL) is a global hub for kitesurfing and wingfoiling – welcoming everyone from glampers to luxury guests, and beginners to pro riders. Operating as a living model of regenerative tourism under the Kommune Collective, KSL blends sports progression with deep conservation. Through mangrove restoration, youth development, creative trash-upcycling workshops raising ocean pollution awareness, and the Kite Green Initiative, KSL protects local ecosystems while ensuring neighboring villagers share in its success.

WHAT MAKES THEM DIFFERENT

There is unrivaled doorstep access to two distinct setups: step out directly onto the butter-flat KSL Lagoon, or walk across the narrow sandbank into ocean swell – all without transport or packing gear. Unlike nearby spots requiring boats or tuk-tuks to switch environments, KSL offers instant transition between mirror-flat freestyle water and open waves. Combined with year-round tropical warmth and island surfaris, it’s an effortless, multi-playground session right from your room.

First-timers are always amazed by how quickly barriers dissolve at our communal dinner tables, surrounded by colorful art, lush greenery, and warm Sri Lankan smiles. Total beginners and pros sit together to share healthy local food and session stories. You don’t just book a spot – you instantly become part of the KSL family.

CONDITIONS & SETUP

The wind blows southwest in summer and northwest in winter. The water varies from butter-flat in the lagoon to swell and waves in the ocean. There is no tide dependency and you will launch straight from the beach.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Kalpitiya has two reliable wind seasons. From mid-May to mid-October, strong cross-shore winds average 18–25 knots, with peaks up to 30 knots. From mid-December to mid-March, steady afternoon winds average 15–25 knots, with January and February being some of the busiest months. Both seasons are warm and dry, with water temperatures around 27°C, so no wetsuit is needed. For stronger wind and long days on the water, choose summer; winter combines reliable afternoon sessions with calm mornings for yoga, diving or dolphin and whale watching.

ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITIES

No wind opens up another side of Kalpitiya. Join a daily yoga class at KSL, explore the area by bicycle, go diving or dolphin and whale watching in season, or head to Wilpattu National Park for a safari. Take a boat trip through the mangroves and the national park, try SUP or kayaking, or venture further inland on a day trip to UNESCO-listed rock fortress Sigiriya. Back at KSL, slow days are easily spent getting a massage, enjoying good food, unwinding with a book in one of the hammocks, or simply soaking in the tropical surroundings.

Getting There

Fly into Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) in Colombo. KSL arranges a direct private taxi transfer, bringing you straight to the camp in about 3 to 3.5 hours.

Gear Options

Bring wings from 3m to 6m in summer and in winter, a mid-to-high volume board, and a versatile medium-aspect foil setup for lagoon and ocean sessions.

Which Wetsuit?

Boardshorts and bikinis only! Water temperature stays around 27°C year-round. Bring a rashguard or UV shirt for sun protection during long sessions.

Typical Dinner

Enjoy full-board fusion buffets combining Western and Sri Lankan cuisine in the main restaurant, or order fresh local crab and burgers à la carte at the beachfront Sunset Bar & Restaurant.

Late Night

Grab a cold beer post-session, or join the Saturday DJ and live music bonfire nights at the beachfront Sunset Bar & Restaurant – Kalpitiya Saturdays are hosted right at the camp!
