INTRODUCTION
Kefalos Windsurfing & Wing Foiling is a family-run windsurf and wingfoil center on the beautiful island of Kos. Situated in Onia/Kamari Bay, at the southwest tip of Kos, wingfoilers will find perfect conditions for beginners all the way through to freestylers, in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with some of the most breathtaking scenery. The center offers lessons and rental gear from Duotone, Neilpryde and SailLoft. Jens and his motivated team speak English, Italian, German, Swiss German, French, Spanish, Danish and Greek.
WHAT MAKES THEM DIFFERENT
Kefalos is the perfect location to learn and practice wingfoiling. The center has the only flat-water spot on the island of Kos. There is lots of space, deep water, and reliable thermal winds. The light wind in the mornings makes it perfect for beginners, and in the afternoon advanced riders will find ideal conditions to improve their skills. Visitors are often surprised how flat the water is and that it is windy at Kefalos and not on the north coast.
CONDITIONS
The Meltemi wind blows W/NW and E/NE between 10-25 knots, accelerated due to the geological formation of the bay and local thermals. This local wind system makes Kefalos the windiest spot on the island with a high probability of wind in the afternoon even if there is no wind forecast. The offshore conditions here mean perfectly flat water which is great for all levels, and no tide to worry about.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
The main season runs from May to October, with the highest probability of wind in June to September and the peak months being July and August. The bay of Kamari is huge, offering plenty of space to water sports enthusiasts even in the busiest months.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITIES
Kefalos Windsurfing & Wing Foiling also offers kayaks and SUPs so you can explore Kastri Island. Locally there is a scuba diving center, sunset surfing lessons, SUP yoga, and guided bike tours around the island. The offshore wind means the beach remains calm even if it’s blowing 30 knots, so those enjoying a book on the beach can do so without getting exfoliated by the sand!
The center is only 15 minutes from Kos International Airport. Flights arrive daily from most European countries with budget-friendly airlines. Transfers can be arranged with local tour companies, as part of a package holiday, or jump in a taxi on arrival.
The most used wings are 4 and 5m for advanced riders. Deep water in the bay means mast length isn’t an issue.
June to Sep is boardshorts/bikini, or 2mm for long sessions (the center also provide them). May/October bring a 3/2 as the wind has a chill to it.
Souvlakis and a cold beer from Antonio’s restaurant are a hit after a big session. Vegans/veggies have plenty of options; the vegan burger from Sydney’s is particularly popular!
Join the team for ‘team dinners’ or their pizza evening down on the beach. Get lost in Sydney’s enormous cocktail menu, or relax with something refreshing at Corner cafe.
