INTRODUCTION
Welcome to Montañita, a foil paradise on the south central coast of Ecuador. Montañita, and the two-hour stretch of coast north to Santa Marianita, is rich with warm water, empty reefs and point breaks perfect for prone, tow, foil assist, Tow Boogie, wing and downwind. Ecuador Foil is part of the ME Hotel, both owned by local foiler Robert Ross. After 15 years living in Ecuador, Robert may have the best knowledge on the entire coast as a true waterman. An F-ONE ambassador, he surfs, kites, wings, and these days spends most of his time on foil, be it prone, tow, Foil Drive, winging and boogieing up and down the Ecuadorian coast. Robert is excited to share this tropical paradise with foilers from around the world.
WHAT MAKES THEM DIFFERENT
In Ecuador you will foil by yourself on an outer flat-rock reef with waves 200-300 meters long year-round, and with Ecuador Foil you will be doing it in comfort with the best guides. There are boats for towing, a couple of Tow Boogies, and they offer Foil Drive lessons. Montañita is one of the most consistent wave spots in South America receiving perfect warm water, empty, reefy, foily waves year-round with no crowds. Visitors are always surprised by the consistency of the waves, the lack of crowds, and also how much fun the local town is with amazing food, barefoot tiki bars and people from around the world enjoying the vibes.
CONDITIONS
Montañita has glassy conditions in front of the hotel for half the year, then the other half is the windy season where they still have great prone and foil assist conditions in front of the hotel but with wind up the coast for wingfoiling and downwinding. Expect Pacific groundswell with waves chest to double overhead year-round in tropical warm water of 25-27°C. In the windy season Ecuador Foil expand their tours within two hours of Montañita for those looking for wind and waves. The wind comes from the south and is side onshore at around 15 to 17 knots on average.
BEST TIME TO VISIT
December to May is glassy season for prone, tow, Boogie and foil assist. June to November is the windy season for wing and downwind but still with waves on an empty reef. There are no crowds at any of the spots, with warm water and waves year-round.
ALTERNATIVE ACTIVITIES
