Dispatches: Limnos, Greece

A few months ago, if you’d have asked Kari Schibevaag to point Limnos (in Greece) out on a map, that finger could have landed anywhere, which is probably the case for 99.9% of us. However, since taking the leap and visiting the island, she can tell you exactly where it is, and why it’s quite so special…

One rainy day in Norway, I got an email from a guy I knew who’s a part of the RRD family. He told me about his school and his project to encourage more females into water sports, and he asked if I wanted to visit him on the island of Limnos. It sounded fun, and as many of you might know, working on getting more girls into the ocean is something I’m quite passionate about too, but I had to admit – I had no idea where Limnos was. Have you heard of it?

After a quick Google search, I was faced with photos of stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and beautiful landscapes that looked perfect for water sports. But what really caught my attention was, surprisingly, the availability of a direct charter flight from Oslo to Limnos… How had I never heard of this island before? I could already see myself on a wing, a SUP, or a kite. Norway was already getting colder, so daydreams of another summer came easily…

I didn’t know much more about Limnos than what I’d seen online, but I decided to go anyway. I boarded the plane, excited and curious, having just left the chilly zero degree Celsius climate of Svalbard, far up north in Norway. The moment I stepped off the plane in Limnos, I was greeted by a wave of warmth that instantly lifted my spirits. This was exactly what I needed.

I was picked up at the airport and driven to Surf Club Keros, just 20 minutes away, where I would be staying. The place felt like an oasis. The center had a series of cozy tents (and we’re talking glamping tents here, not camping tents) each with its own unique vibe, and a large communal area where all the meals were served. There was a space dedicated to yoga and even an outdoor cinema. From the center, you could see right down to the water where all the action was happening – wingfoiling, kiteboarding, windsurfing, and stand-up paddling. The spot was just over a five-minute walk away, or you could take the shuttle, but I preferred to walk. After all, it felt good to stretch my legs after the long journey.

There was also surfing on the island. I didn’t go surfing, but I saw some pictures of different beaches from the girls in the camp who were there for the surf. They always came home with a smile so I would say there were some decent waves too.

The club had everything you could need: a café, a surf school, parasols on the beach and a little shop stocked with gear. It was heaven. The water was crystal clear, the wind was perfect, and the temperature was just right – not too hot, not too cold, but just enough to make you feel alive (although it should be noted that I was there in September!). I couldn’t wait to get out on the water. I grabbed my board and had an amazing session. It felt incredible to be back gliding over crystal-clear, warm waters. I hadn’t felt this free in a long time. A small amount of neoprene for protection, feeling the warm wind and sun on my exposed skin.

The days flew by, filled with hours on the water, delicious food, while enjoying the company of new friends on the bikini tribe camp. The atmosphere was laid-back and welcoming; everyone was there to enjoy themselves and share their love of the ocean. In September, the spot was not crowded at all, and there was plenty of space on the water and under the parasols – just pure joy in every moment.

But Limnos isn’t just about water sports. The island has so much more to offer. After my sessions, I would explore the island’s sand dunes, wandering through charming little villages, and visiting the ancient castle that overlooks the sea. The sunsets were also something else – fiery skies that seemed to stretch forever, painting the whole island in shades of orange and pink. It was full moon when I was there and to be able to see the sun going down and the moon rising from a SUP board was something very special. Sitting together with the girls doing yoga and looking at this amazing light… each evening felt like the perfect end to an already perfect day.

I can’t believe that a simple email brought me to this hidden gem of an island. Limnos is the kind of place that sneaks up on you. One minute you’re just curious, and the next you’re completely in love. It’s a place where you can truly disconnect, enjoy nature, and embrace the simple pleasures of life. Between the warm waters, the incredible wind conditions, the friendly locals and tourists, and the rich history, it’s hard to imagine why more people haven’t discovered Limnos yet. For me, it’s the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation, a little paradise tucked away in the Aegean Sea.

So, if you ever get the chance, don’t hesitate. Pack your gear, book a flight, and experience Limnos for yourself. It’s more than just a destination – it’s a place that captures your heart and makes you never want to leave.
